History Trivia is a history game played on a world map that repaints itself for each era. It is run by Mateus Araujo Santos, an individual based in Brazil. By playing, you agree to what follows.
Using the game
The event of the day is free, and you do not need an account to play it: Without an account, 2 events of the day, every day. With a free account, the event of the day in every era, plus 10 free questions in each locked era. You may play it and talk about it anywhere you like. What you may not do is take the game apart to compete with it: no scraping the event database, no copying the questions or map data into another product, and no automated access that degrades the game for other people.
Historical content — please read this one
Every event in this game carries its sources, and getting history right is the thing we care about most. But a game is not a textbook, and three honest limits come with the format:
- Dates can be disputed. The further back you go, the more historians disagree — and this game goes back to 60 BC.
- The map is illustrated, not cartographic. Territories are a deliberate simplification of who controlled what in a given year. Real borders were messier, often contested, and frequently unknown even to the people living inside them.
- One year has to stand for a whole era. Each era is drawn at a single moment, so events decades apart share a map that was only ever true once.
Play it to get curious, not to settle an argument. Do not cite it in your homework, your thesis, or anything that matters — go to the sources instead. We correct mistakes when we find them, and we would genuinely like to hear about any you spot.
Subscriptions
A paid subscription unlocks every event in every era, with no daily limit — beyond the free part described above. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders: it sells you the subscription, charges any sales tax or VAT that applies where you live, and handles billing questions and refunds under its buyer terms. We never see or store your card number, and the price is always stated before you are asked to pay. Rooms to play with friends are planned and do not exist yet.
You can cancel at any time from the billing portal, linked from Settings — cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. To get money back, see Refunds below. Deleting your account is a separate action from cancelling, and is only available once no subscription is active on it.
If a renewal payment fails, you keep access while the payment is retried. If every retry fails, the subscription ends.
Refunds
If you are not happy, ask for a full refund within 14 days of any charge — the first one or a renewal — and you will get it, no questions asked. Write to contact@historytrivia.org or request it from Paddle at paddle.net, using the details on your receipt. The money goes back to the original payment method, and a refunded subscription ends straight away.
Who owns what
The questions, the written event summaries, the artwork and the code belong to Mateus Araujo Santos. The underlying map geometry is derived from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain, and we are glad to say so. Historical facts belong to nobody.
No warranty
The game is provided as it is. It may be unavailable, it may lose your progress if you play without an account and clear your browser data, and it may contain errors. To the extent the law allows, Mateus Araujo Santos is not liable for any loss arising from using it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Brazil. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protections you have under the law of the country you live in.
